Asissi

Saint Clare (Santa Chiara di Assisi) was an early follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and is best known as the founder of the Poor Clares, the female order of the Franciscans. After a life of piety and labor, including miraculously saving Assisi from attack on two occasions, Clare died in 1253. Seven years after her death, the incorrupt body of the newly canonized saint was interred in the Church of Santa Chiara in Assisi. By the 19th century when a new crypt was built for the Saint’s remains, it was discovered that Claire was no longer officially Incorrupt, yet her skeleton was in perfect condition. Today Saint Clare’s remains lie in a state of repose, covered in a wax figure dressed in the habit of her Order.
May the staff, children, parents and friends at St. Clare's Catholic Primary School be guided by our patroness, St. Clare of Assisi and we may strive to follow her as a witness to Christ and become humble servants for the Lord. St. Clare, pray for us.

We were blessed to have been able to have Mass together everyday during our pilgrimage. Through the Eucharist, we were transformed into greater witnesses of Jesus. When we receive the Eucharist, we are one with Jesus. Today we celebrated Mass together at St. Clare's Basilica in Assisi. I put forward special prayers of intercession for you all at St.Clare's, Narellan Vale.

Vigil Sleepout

This photo shows you just how close the pilgrims were packed together at the sleep out. There was a real sense of unity among the people. I am so proud to be Catholic and I am blessed to have been sent by the Lord to participate in WYD11. I was honoured to be able to represent the Catholic Church in Australia, my school, my parish and my family. After walking to 2 hours in 40 degree heat, carrying back backs that weighed 8kg, then being told that the venue is full, waiting in the street and willing to sleep outside of the gates, finally getting in two hours later only to walk directly into a hurricane storm (literally), we made it in!!!! Turns out the hurricane was much needed and heaven sent. It sent pilgrims running for shelter while we persisted singing, "be not afraid". Persistence does pay off! Our faith saw us get a great spot to set up for the night and the storm cooled everything down for the first time all week. What a night to remember.

To say thank you to all of the pilgrims, Pope Benedict XVI, wanted to drive through the crowds before the final Mass. He was delighted to see such committed young people willing to sleep out in such difficult circumstances. The storm the night before actually blew the tents away that sheltered the blessed sacrament. As a result, we weren't able to receive the Eucharist at the final Mass. A little disappointing but we all received a blessing by the thousands of priests that concelebrated Mass. Pope Benedict's homily was fantastic and perfect for his audience. He spoke with simplicity and faith, encouraging us to remain firm in the faith.
